History of Yangon
Yangon was a small fishermen's village founded by the Mon in the 6th century AD, around the Shwedagon pagoda.
This is an ethnic group that we believe is from western China and currently resides in eastern Myanmar and west-central Thailand.
In 1989, the ruling military junta changed the name from the city called Rangoon to the present-day Yangon.
Myanmar, where Yangon is located, was formerly known as Burma, but this name has been changed.
